I bet Martin Johnson never went on a leadership course
And also bet that he doesn't write down his values and seek out other team member's values and then have a set of team values.
My values may include Integrity and Quality of Life. So bloody what? My company may believe in Integrity as well. So what? It's just a word to put on a wallposter, unless something actually changes or you entered the company knowing that you had to be strong on Integrity every minute of every day.
I am getting weary of people defining what leadership is by looking at "Good Leaders" and believing you can apply that to other "Leaders". I've given up on them. One of my values is Integrity, so what! When I get up in the morning, I don't think, "Ah Tony, how's your Integrity today?" no, I think, "Ah Tony, I need a piss!" And I go to the toilet. John Moore prompted my thinking on this. I'm serious, values don't come into serving customers at checkout counters.
You simply can't copy Dell, and Microsoft and Walmart, and expect to have an equally successful company. All one can do is create a successful company and then crow about it, or let others do your crowing!
Forget Leadership and Values. Ants don't have Leadership and Values, they just get on with it.
Uncommunicative, less than media friendly, Johnson is pitch- rather than book-smart. He is, as he would say himself, an ordinary bloke. An accidental, initially reluctant captain, at first he was too taciturn to be a really good one.
