I'm a tennis nut. Played most of my life. Followed the game and players for as long as I can remember.
And I reckon I can work out how to improve some top players!
So who is the all time greatest player? Well post '68 one website rates all the players, using a chess type ranking (that calculates Kasparov as the greatest ever chess master) that can pit any player against any player of the past from '68 onwards.
And the winner is.....John McEnroe. Many would have McEnroe as the greatest player, but I'm surprised that statistically he shows up as the best. That's because at one point in time over a 6 month period, he beat all the players who also had very high rankings. This would have driven his all time score up.
There's a strong case for Ivan Lendl being the all time best player, based on his "Dominance Factor" for a long period. I can't comment on that, because coming from the UK, we only had a Wimbledon centric view of Lendl, which wasn't dominant!!
I'm still trying to work out if Federer is better than Sampras. Sampras has the better serve, and Federer has the better backhand. So it's down to how Federer would handle Sampras's serve. Difficult to say, because I'm shocked at how easily Federer deals with Roddick's serve. Talking of which, is Roddick really good enough to be ranked 9th All-Time, and Nadal 10th!! The stats seem a bit skewed to current players who somehow have got themselves very high ratings.
My choice? I'm still thinking about it. Two underestimated players who on their day can be devastating are Safin, and Edberg. Safin for sheer power, and what he did to Sampras in the US Open 2000 Final , and Edberg with his loop kick serve, and volley, would be very hard to beat. And I noticed that Edberg is the only ever junior Grand Slam winner, on all 4 surfaces. Of course any player on their day, such as Becker, could be unbeatable.
Some of my favourites?
Korda (Loopy backhand)
Rafter (Serve placement and volley)
