Whilst my internet was down for 15 days (thanks Telstra), I wondered what I was going to do with my life. Having read Tim Ferriss's 4 Hour Work Week, he recommends giving up on business books, and reading novels. So why not give it a go. I looked along my bookshelf and realised I'd never read Elliot Perlman's Seven Types of Ambiguity. Elliot is a Melbourne writer and he's the bastard who introduced me to Carlton Football Club. 7 years of misery. Nevertheless the novel is excellent, and I strongly recommend reading it, especially for male 40 somethings.
So what next with fiction reading? Firstly, I thought Amazon would help me, by me refining the list of books I like, own, or wish for. However, the recommendations are a bit heavy on more of the same writer, instead of, "If you like this writer, you'll definitely like this writer/book." What I found works best is to pick a book you like, find what reviewers have put it in their Listmania, and that usually gives you a good range. I found one list with at least 10 excellent novels.
Consequently, I'm currently reading Mitch Albom's Five People You Meet in Heaven. Not a difficult choice, given I loved the other two books Tuesdays with Morrie, and For One More Day. And I've also bought Jodi Picoult - My Sister's Keeper. It's a nice change to focus on fiction/novels instead of business books, because I don't have to remember anything from them!! My move towards simplicity!!
Hey, maybe it's time for a few Audacity audio books, though I didn't have a good experience last time trying to get my mp3 player to run Ricky Gervais Audacity shows, even thought it worked fine on my laptop.
